Level 1

“I can say only simple greeting.”

My grammar is matching that low level and also speaking and listening are very poor. Only easy and daily conversation is available. To understand longer sentences or unfamiliar words, translating is necessary. I started learning Korean because of travel or because I am a fan of K-pop or K-Drama.

What are your concerns?

I can read but lack of vocabulary words. It’s hard to understand real Korean speaking. I barely know basic grammar or intermediate. Pronunciation is also needed to practice. The differentiation of homonyms is hard to get it. Creating my own sentence takes long.

Level 2

“I want to be more precise.”

I can make a sentence using basic words and grammar but it’s very slow and feel like broken Korean. I need more practice in speaking. I can read Korean but barely speak. It is hard to figure out what is different from homonyms.

What are your concerns?

I feel that I don’t progress because I am comfortable with the ‘Grammar in books’ but when I watch drama or movies I don’t get anything at all. There is no problem in listening to record files of books but I can’t understand when Korean speak rapidly. Wish to practice speaking Korean naturally and clearly. So many advanced words and difficult Sino-character use in Korean are my biggest concerns.”

“I want to speak more fluently.”

Daily small talk, culture, and short storytelling is not a problem but in the case of specialized subject makes me hard to speak. Whenever I say, some Koreans don’t understand. I want to speak just like native speakers.

What are your concerns?

I used to use comfortable expressions and sentence patterns. I keep speaking and writing all the same way. Lack of confidence in arguing or debating is the concern. And I can’t say a long sentence correctly. I can’t tell the difference between grammar and words used for writing and speaking.

Level 4

“I want to communicate with co-workers.”

I can communicate and write in intermediate-level grammar and expressions. However there are many difficulties at work, a study in university, or master’s degree when the presentation, debation, and meeting in Korean are needed. To be more fluent in Korean, I need to study advanced-level Korean. I want to speak proficiently.

What are your concerns?

It is difficult to give more than 3 minutes of presentations at work and in university classes or have teamproject or discussions with Korean. Logically, writing essays, assignments, etc. takes a long time and is hard to follow. I encounter a lot of news and long articles, but it is still difficult to understand the text accurately because of the advanced Sino-characters.

I have to figure out and study a graduate level thesis, a large amount of data. Also, I am in charge of important meetings such as business conferences at the company. I must be fluent in Korean and use advanced terminology fluently. It’s like a presentation or discussion.

What are your concerns?

I want to speak just like native speakers but still need to study more. I want to feel confident conversing about various topics and have in-depth discussions about a range of topics. I can write my thesis or essay, but correction is not sure for business or college admissions/graduate. I also want to know the background of Korea very deeply more than now.
